Common sleeping problems
There are different types of sleeping problems, but insomnia is the most common. Insomniacs have trouble falling asleep. They wake up at odd times during the night or too early in the morning. Insomnia may cure itself, but sometimes it persists for a long duration. If it is not addressed, it can lead to various problems such as depression, daytime fatigue, irritability, and even injuries and accidents. Lack of sleep can literally drive you to the edge.
Sleep Hypnosis is an effective and natural method for helping insomnia. To understand how it works, you must first learn about the mechanism of sleep.
How does a person sleep?
Sleeping is not a uniform process; it occurs in different stages.
The complete sleep cycle has 5 stages, the fourth stage being “deep restorative sleep.” Then comes REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep “the dreaming sleep”. While dreaming, you experience a phenomenon called Rapid Eye Movement (REM) characterized by quick, random movement of the eyes. During this stage, the brain is quite active. So even though you may be technically sleeping at the time, this particular sleep stage is called paradoxical sleep.
REM sleep is crucial for maintaining mental and emotional health. Dreaming is what helps the emotional centers of your brain cope with emotional stimuli and arousals that happened during the day. It sort of helps reset the brain and make it ready to face the emotional stimuli barrage of the next day. If you do not get enough REM sleep, you will consistently under-dream and feel hyperactive, if you get too much REM sleep, ie if you over-dream you are at risk of falling into depression and you will wake up feeling tired and lethargic.
During the slow wave sleep, the physical processes of the body get rejuvenated. The immune system gets a boost during this stage.
Why is lack of sleep a common problem?
A person is able to fall smoothly into slumber only when progressive relaxation takes place. If you are upset or excited about anything, causing an adrenaline surge in the body, it can affect the natural process of falling asleep. While some people can turn off their brain at the end of the day and not worry about problems during the night, others are not able to transition that easily.
If you do not get enough slow wave restorative sleep your body is not able to repair and rejuvenate itself and this can cause long term health problems.
What is the long-term solution for insomnia?
Chronic insomniacs often do not even remember what it feels like to have a good night sleep. It is almost like they have somehow forgotten how to fall asleep. They may even have started associating nighttime with anxiety and worry about whether they’ll get some sleep.
In these situations, what is required is a complete retraining or rewiring of the body and mind to reach a state that is necessary to prepare for sleep and allow it to happen naturally. The harder you try to sleep, the less your chances of success.
You cannot will yourself to sleep, and OTC sleep medications often give you very poor quality rest along with a long list of side effects. You will need to approach the entire sleep situation in a totally different way.
Our Sleep Hypnosis Program is about setting the stage for sleep, so it happens smoothly and naturally. Through hypnosis, your body and mind will remember how to prepare to rest for the night. And sleep has no choice but to follow.
